Grade 7 Graduation
Our grad evening will take place at the school at 5:30pm on Friday, June 19th.  We will honor our 15 amazing graduates, celebrate their accomplishments, the teachers who have guided them, and remember the school year together.  The ceremony will be followed by a potluck meal.  Tickets are free, but please make sure you return your slip with the number of tickets your family needs by June 5th.

The students have also chosen to go to Play Land for their graduation field trip.  The trip is scheduled to take place on June 24th - more details are coming.

Canada-Thon Contest
Thank you all for your studying and preparation for the school-wide Canada-Thon.  Karan Gill, Karman Kang, and Mehroop Kaur answered all 50 questions correctly - great job!  After a round of tie-breaker questions, Mehroop Kaur was awarded first place.

Buntzen Lake Field Trip
Grade 7 and 5A participated in a long, beautiful hike around Buntzen Lake on Tuesday.  During the hike the students participated in a science scavenger hunt and shared aboriginal stories from the land they were hiking on.  Pictures are up on the pictures section of the website.

Science Fair
Students have been working on creating informative displays and presentations on the experiments they conducted before Spring Break.  Please encourage your child by helping them print and organize poster board decorations, and having them explain their experiment to you.  We look forward to seeing you at our school-wide Science Fair on April 10th!

Earth Day Poster Contest
Next Thursday, April 9th students will be challenged to create an informative, inspiring, and eye-catching poster for Earth day.  The posters will include an Earth-friendly message and should be presented in a unique, creative, and visually appealing way.  Please encourage your child to work on a plan over the coming week as they will only have 40 minutes to create their posters in class.

Speech Contest Winners
Thank you all for your efforts in the speech contest.  I know it was nerve-wracking, but you did a wonderful job.  Congratulations to our winners:

1st place: Humkirat Gill
2nd place: Karman Kang
3rd place: Sahejpreet Chohan

Jump Rope for Heart
Congratulations class! You have done an excellent job fundraising and have really shown your charitable spirit.  As a class we raised $1038, which is approximately 20% of the school's donations.  As the smallest class in the school that is a HUGE achievement! Well done!

Our Environment Our Health Project
I am excited to announce that starting this week GAD's grade 6 and 7 students will be teaming up with students from New Zealand, Finland, India, Bangladesh, and the United States to investigate environmental issues in a collaborative online space.  Under the direction of their teachers students will use Wikispaces to communicate and present their ideas to one another.  By working with students from around the world, we will be able to explore environmental issues both locally and globally.

Your child has provided their e-mail address and will be using a monitored online environment (Wikispaces) to interact with their local and global team members.  While we will use Skype together as a whole class, your child is not required to sign up for or use Skype - they will only be using the monitored Wikispaces to connect with their groups.

The topics our teams will be exploring are:
Air Pollution
Chemical Pollution
Deforestation (Temperate Forests)
Deforestation (Tropical Forests)
Fresh Water Pollution
Global Warming
Noise Pollution
Human Waste Pollution
Over Hunting
Over Fishing
Pesticide Pollution
Radiation Pollution
Sea Level Rise
Visual Pollution
Salt Water Pollution

Speech Contest - February 25th, 2015
On February 25th GAD students in Grades 4-7 will be having a Speech Contest.  Because Grade 7 students are required to do at least 2 speeches at the end of the year, I have altered the rules for their contest to make it a bit of a spontaneous challenge.  Students will draw a topic from a cup and have 10 minutes to prepare a speech with a clear beginning, middle and end.  Students will then deliver their speeches and be scored on the following criteria:

Composition of Speech
Presentation of Speech
Use of topic – student speaks on their assigned topic effectively and with confidence (humor is an asset)

Audience - establishes and maintains eye contact with members of the audience

Effective introduction - interesting, captures attention and indicates the topic

Delivery - fluent and smooth and appears relaxed

Effective body or main portion of speech - a logical and smooth flow of the material

Pronunciation - correct

Use of language - effective selection, combination and use of words

Articulation - clear, easy to understand

Effective conclusion - summarizes material and concludes speech effectively; not too abrupt

Volume - appropriate volume level; effective changes to volume level throughout speech

Time length – within the set 1-3 minute limit
Speed - speaks at a speed that can be understood, varies speed and uses pauses effectively

You can help your child prepare by having them practice preparing and delivering a speech to you or other family members.  Here is the list of possible topics:

What you would find in my closet
What you'd find under my bed
The best letter of the alphabet
Why your mom/dad is special
A day that stands out
If I had a million dollars to give away
If cats/dogs ruled the world
A trip to remember
My favourite day of the year
If I could only eat three foods forever
If I could design a school
Why books are important
Three surprising facts about me
How to impress your parents
A job I'd love to have
A day in my life
If I could travel through time
An important lesson I've learned
What I've learned from cartoons
Three things I'd change if I ruled the world
If I had invented school
The best theme park rides
How to annoy a sister/brother
Three things that scare me
Things I'll never eat

FSA Tests
Every year, grade 4 and 7 students throughout the province complete a standardized test that is administered by the Ministry of Education.  The Foundational Skills Assessment (FSA) test will assess your child’s math, reading comprehension, and writing level in order to collect data about B.C. schools.  The test has multiple parts and will be taking place a little at a time throughout the week of February 10-13, 2015.

Because the tests need to be taken within a specific timeframe, myself and the administration team request that you do not book appointments or events that will have your child missing school for the coming week.  Arrangements can be made if your child is sick, but it is imperative that your child is at school next week unless illness prevents them from being here.

One the tests have been scored and processed by the Ministry you will be given your child’s results.  Please note that while this test has importance as a representation of G.A.D. Elementary School’s progress, your child’s scores will not be included in their report card grades.  If you have any questions or concerns I would be happy to meet with you or communicate with you via e-mail.

December News

Hello parents and students of Ms. Reid's Grade 7 class!

A lot of communication about school wide events reaches you through newsletters and information brought home by the students, but on this page I am hoping to keep everyone updated on monthly classroom news.

As the term wraps up we are busily working towards finishing our current units and preparing for report cards, which will be handed out on December 12th.  Here are the topics we are studying in each subject:

French - Cafes and food service vocabulary. We will be hosting a charity bake sale in both French and English on January 14th. This project will help students use the vocabulary they have learned this term, while impacting our local and global community in a positive way.

Health and Career - Values and goals. Specifically, how our values affect the goals we make, and how to set goals for healthy eating and career opportunities.

Language Arts - Informational writing and Hunger Games novel study.  We are alternating between writing effective, descriptive, informational pieces such as articles, memoirs, and informative flyers and studying the popular novel The Hunger Games.

Math - Circles and area.  This unit explores the parts of a circle, circle graphs, and has students practice the various formulas for calculating the area of common shapes.

Science - Human impacts on ecosystems.  Students just finished a project on healthy, functioning ecosystems, and now we will be exploring the ways that humans impact ecosystems in both negative and positive ways.  Get ready to have some environmentally conscious kids in your home!

Social Studies - Ancient Egypt.  We have been exploring the geography and culture of Ancient Egypt.

We will also be working on a video presentation for the Christmas Assembly on December 15th, in which we will be creating the story of the first Christmas with our own original artwork.

I wish everyone a successful end of the term, and a happy, restful Winter Break!

Sincerely,
Ms. Reid
