Weekend Homework, June 13-15, 2014

Hello students,

I hope you all have a restful weekend and are ready for our last full week of school on Monday. As most of you have missed the last two days of school you will need to complete the following classwork to stay caught up:

1. Today we learned about the different types of tectonic plate boundaries.  Please read pages 236-43 of your science textbook and complete the table in the Check Your Understanding section on page 243.  The types of faults that need to be included on your chart are:
- Divergent boundaries
- Convergent boundaries (ocean plate/continental plate)
- Convergent boundaries (ocean plate/ocean plate)
- Convergent boundaries (continental plate/continental plate)
- Transform boundaries

All of the information you will need can be found in the assigned textbook pages.

2. In class we created a timeline to show how laws and types of leadership have changed over time.  Use your social studies textbook to answer the questions about Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece below.  Afterwards, create a timeline that lists the types of laws and leadership at different time periods from Mesopotamian civilization to today.  End your timeline with information about Canadian human/political rights and the way we elect our leaders.  Your timeline should span the year 3500 BCE until 2014 CE (use the timeline at the back of your social studies book to help you with the dates and to show you an example of a timeline).  You may work on this in partners or groups of 3 if you meet up with a classmate over the weekend.

Mesopotamia (p. 83-84)
1.       What is the Code of Hammurabi?
2.       Why is the Code of Hammurabi important?
3.       When was the Code of Hammurabi written, and where was it kept during the Mesopotamian Empire?
4.       What type of leaders did the Mesopotamians have? (kings, pharaohs, democratically elected leaders...?)

Egypt (p. 100-104)
1.       What type of leaders did the Egyptians have? (kings, pharaohs, democratically elected leaders...?)
2.       Describe or diagram the social organization of ancient Egypt
3.       Egyptian pharaohs were considered to be “gods on earth”...what kind of power/control did that give the pharaoh?

Greece (p. 161-166)
1.      The people of ancient Greece believed in “rule by the people”, so they invented the system of ______________________________ to choose their leaders and make decisions.
2.      Who did and did not have political power in the ancient Greek system of democracy?

3.      Describe the role of the Assembly and the Council in the ancient Greek system of democracy.

Have a great weekend and a wonderful Father's Day!

Ms. Reid
